HEALTH: EBOLA VIRUS AWARENESS (KEYPOINTS)


  • Ebola is caused by a virus
  • It causes a severe illness, with bleeding.
  • Up to 90% of the people who get this virus will die
  • There is no vaccine and no treatment available
  • People can quickly become infected
HOW DOES IT SPREAD

Sick people can spread this disease to others. People in direct contact with sick people are at the highest risk and this would include family members and healthcare workers.

Dead bodies can also spread the disease so we must be careful.
  • do not touch, wash or kiss dead bodies
  • do not wash hands in the same bucket as others who have touched the body
SYMPTOMS
  • fever
  • tiredness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • cough
  • bleeding (mostly from nose and mouth)
The symptoms can start within two days of contact with an infected person or body

EBOLA PREVENTION
  • keep away from anyone who is sick or dead
  • do not touch an infected person or their body fluids i.e blood, vomit, urine or faeces
  • dead bodies carry the virus so bury carefully and keep away
  • wash your hands often and use soap
  • do not touch or eat bush meat or bats
WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET SICK
  • Contact your medical care provider
  • listen to their advice
  • keep away from others so they don't get sick
  • be careful of your vomit and diarrhoea
